I wish they sold the box w/o batteries then let you decide how many batteries you want to buy for it. Granted that would require configuring it correctly for pack voltage output, low voltage cutoff, and balance charging. It has the equivalent of roughly ~64, 18650 cells, unless they are LiFePO4, then more or larger cells.

If you are savvy enough to modify this, you can probably build a more capable system for about the same price or less. Battery Hookup is a popular source for lithium cells.
^ I've seen youtube videos of people who did that and thought a bit about their choices and what I'd do differently, and to make it yourself would require a large amount of time, days (weeks to months including receiving materials) to end up with something less integrated and less serviceable or else quite a bit larger and heavier.
With modern electronics, sometimes you are more reinventing the wheel than anything else. It's usually more productive to modify an existing product if possible.
