I wondered what the difference between a splitting and a felling wedge was. I didn't find any definitive descriptions, although plastic felling wedges do less damage to the chainsaw when a newbie is holding it.

A felling wedge is for lifting a tree over center to make it fall when you are cutting a tree down. You hammer it into the "back cut" after making a "face cut" and the tree falls over. Also it can be used if your saw is pinched to take pressure off the bar and chain. You are right that the plastic is easy on chains. A splitting wedge is used to split wood that is cut to firewood length. The two cannot be interchanged....I've tried. Also, this is not an especially good deal for what it is and should not be used to fell trees unless you have some experience.
