In a best-case scenario, imitation vanilla comes from guaiacol, a fragrant liquid obtained by distilling wood-tar creosote. Worst case: Castoreum, which comes from a beaver's castor sacs, located near the **** glands. The slimy brown substance is used by beavers to mark their territory and is often mixed with gland secretions and urine.
Fact check - its rarely used anymore, and in this product, it uses propylene glycol and vanillin.
Today most vanillin is produced from the petrochemical raw material guaiacol. The route entails condensation of glyoxylic acid with guaiacol to give mandelic acid, which is oxidized to produce a phenylglyoxylic acid. This acid undergoes a decarboxylation to afford vanillin.
Guaiacol is also used medicinally as an expectorant, antiseptic, and local anesthetic.
