I'd stay away had one of these! The thing shattered and fiber glass strands/splinter popped when it broke. Lucky they didn't fly in my eyes, at least my hand where at the top to get leverage. While sure wood does kind of the same thing, know what I experienced I'd say a wooden handle is less dramatic and has at least there that cracking sound you're asking to much. This was like no big deal till it was... And sure I was working in highly tough rooted palm ball, but not excessive for what you use a shovel for. Stick to the stick (wood) and heck I ran down to H-D and got a top of the line wood and I don't think I paid much more than this...
Virtually all of their digging tools are fiberglass and have been for years. I've been using these on roots and junk dirt with shale for a while. Like you said, wood can splinter just the same. I imagine you had a hairline crack that developed and it finally gave way. It has a LT warranty, anyway.
