People (like me) use mp3 players because phones are too big and fragile to use athletically. I clip a small mp3 player to the chest strap on my Camelbak when I go out for a long skate. If I should crash, it is very unlikely to be harmed and, if it does, it doesn't cost much to replace. Further, it has physical buttons so I can control it without having to take it off and look at it. Touch screens don't work well with sweat either. The real threat to small mp3 players is not phones it is sport watches that music capability and bluetooth.
