Must say I never thought much or kindly of Tivo. Then about two years ago I was looking for a way to cut my bill but still provide the wife and kids an easy & quick way to watch TV. I decided to give Tivo a try and bought a used Roamio Plus with Lifetime subscription and a a pair of Mini's for $300. Since the Mini's work off the Roamio, I only needed 1 cablecard which Comcast was required to provide with my subscription. That cut my cable bill by over $40 per month and the Tivo basically paid for itself in less 8 months.
I have to say that since having the Tivo I can't understand why I didn't get one earlier! The commercial skip feature is a reason alone to get the Tivo, but it does so much more. I love having all my apps in one place, so no more switching inputs. The apps are a bit slower than on my Roku but it's still easier for the wife and kids.
I tried the streaming options but for a channel surfer, those just don't cut it. Switching channels is painfully slow no matter if its DirectTV Now, Playstation Vue or Sling TV.
Don't hate if you haven't tried it! However it's not worth it unless you get a lifetime subscription.
I bought a couple Tivo HDs over 10 years ago with lifetime service, and they paid for themselves within a year. Now that I've cut cable they're even better.
One of them is starting to freeze up though, so I may need to get in there and replace the hard drive and / or power supply.
↑ I had the same problem. As you suggested a change of hard drive and a fresh software install solved the problem. At the same time I blew out all of the dust that had accumulated inside with a Dust Off.
I bought the Roameo about 5 years ago with lifetime and I think I paid about $900 for it. More if you count the hard drive upgrade that I did. I’m now having difficulty cutting the cord or switching to something else because I would lose the Tivo. It’s got some issues if you’re a sports fan where it’ll record a show on the wrong channel that’s blacked out in your area but beyond that I hadn’t had any problems with it. The Tivo minis are a bit glitchy and require frequent restarts but for an extra $100 per device you can add one to every room in the house.

Tivo is built into my SuddenLink DVR so they are not as desperate as you might think.

Still...love my Tivos.
