^ The field corn grown for ethanol is not food grade, except feeding livestock. I'm more against than for having ethanol in fuel, due to inefficiencies in making it and older engines that can't tolerate it, but in some cases it still beats the pollution caused by fracking.
We could discuss what other food could be grown on the same land, but the US is not short of land for crops. The problem is more one of the high cost of farming where to stay afloat, many had to turn to ethanol just to make ends meet, and then they may be able to keep the farm operating to grow other things, too.

That truly is the sad reality. Why we continue to import so much rather than support our farming industry is beyond me.
