what's the catch? Why are these relatively cheap compared to other mesh products? Even the 3 pack is somewhat affordable

Here's just some of the reasons they are cheap now: These have no web interface. You have to use their apps to control them. They are lacking features which have been basic features on wifi hubs for years.
