This is the lowest price for this drive. Doesn't run as hot as the previous model this drive replaced, it still runs warm though. Some claimed the previous model runs hot enough to burn fingers. This drive have excellent read speed but not so good write speed. It's a very good deal if need a large storage portable drive and mainly do reading only like in a media player.

Is the shell portion plastic or black anodized aluminum? I never understood why they would make the casing plastic when the connector shell itself is so important in reliability.

If it's an application where you plug it in once and leave it in, plastic should be fine but is not what you want if you're plugging and unplugging it regularly.

Its plastic, but seems sturdy. I have the previous model and it for sure runs cooler too
