Yes if you want to hear music through them, need a sound signal source. Not sure a phone or mp3 player would drive these. These are nice but not always the greatest, direct reflecting only works if you can position them ideally. Ultimately it is whether or not you like the sound. Consider giving them a listen in a retail store, if you like them then purchase online if cheaper.

I've previously sold Bose product and always thought it was WAY overpriced for what you are getting. I've heard this set up and it does not sound good. PLUS, you would have to pair this with at the very least a 2 channel integrated amplifier in the price range of $150 - $300 to give these things a nice clean signal, which they need or they will sound really bad. I would recommend spending the same money on a pair of entry level book shelves and a matching powered sub such as the Klipsch refernce series for about $100 for the pair and the reference 10 sub for like $150. You will be starting with a WAY better platform. Heck, even the Bose soundbar in the price range sounds better and it is already powered. These are a BIG PASS.
Don’t these usually come in complete systems? I’m no audiophile but easy setup with Bluetooth to the speakers is the way to go. It’s compressed audio but for basic stuff less hassle than wiring around the walls
