Is there a cost for the camera add in? Can you just use it as FTP?

Most the boxes come with one or two camera licenses for their Surveillance Station Software and after that you have to buy licenses which aren't cheap. I have three cameras on my DS1512+ but only had to buy one extra license @ about $50. You can setup an FTP and use it that way too but then you rely on the camera's software. I found Synology's SS is better.

Also, make sure to segregate the hard drive used for the recordings from your other data. I killed 3 of 5 3TB drives before I realized that it was the constant writing / re-writing of the camera video that was killing them. Upgraded to 4TB drives but use one of the remaining 3TB drives for the cameras.
