This is a 2016 model as indicated by the model number.

Last November I bought the DS216+ which replaced the DS216 being sold here. It failed within months, but Synology did a replacement with no fuss and paid ground shipping both ways. It was a little bit of a hassle because they told me by email they would send out the replacement unit first, and I would ship back the bad unit---but they changed their mind and waited for me to ship the bad one back first. The replacement unit I received back was a Synology refurb, not a new one.

Now the DS216+ has been replaced by the DS216+ II. No additional functionality AFAIK. It just uses a different motherboard because the manufacturer discontinued the previous one used in the DS216+.

BTW, the 16TB capacity is RAID-0 or JBOD but you'll probably want to use RAID-1 in which case it will be 8 TB.

Synology NAS' are popular with the smart tech set, which leads me to believe they are getting paid for product placement. But QNAP NAS' do the exact same thing and are about 25% cheaper across the board.

No knock on Synology. I'm sure their products are rock solid. I just think they are overpriced.

It's not really their products (hardware) but their software that make Synology what it is. I have a DS1512 and it's been rock solid from day one. Software gives tons of possibilities.

Check out the HP mini Proliant G7 or G8 server. It's a low power PC with 4x SATA RAID bay. Starts below $200. Add the incredible (and free, and easy to install) OpenMediaVault, and you have a phenomenal, easy to maintain, small and quiet media server for peanuts.

The applications available in the Qnap ecosystem are extensive as well. While I'm sure there are variations in quality, most of the tasks you might want your NAS to perform can be done on either platform with equal success.
