What is the advantage of using the smart home products that require a hub, as opposed to use one that connects directly to my wifi?

For me using non WiFi based devices has two advantages. Devices from different manufacturers can be used with one central controller or software package. This allows cheaper implementation because of more choice most times. Secondly WiFi based devices are almost always cloud based for control. If the manufacturer ceases support you have a doorstop. Protocols like Zwave can be self contained in your home without relying on the cloud.
