Been using it on several phones for a couple years now. It's kind of a pain to downgrade from the default high-end package they sign you up for (and they make you pay them an extra $10 to (they said) protect them from overage due to lag in data usage reporting. After you get it downgraded the phones work OK. For the money ($20 + $0 per month) it's not bad if you don't use tons of data and texts. They do show ads in the freedompop app you use for texting and dialing so that's probably where they make some of their money.
Catches: 1. You pay another $10 later on to downgrade to the free plan, so it's not really $9.99, it's more like $20. 2. Voice calls are routed through the data network (VoIP), which means high latency delays, which can make voice conversations very difficult and frustrating. 3. You MUST use at least 5MB of data every month or they automatically close your account for inactivity. 4. You are required to have the FreedomPop messaging app installed on the phone or they will eventually put a hold on your network access. It has a permissions list that goes on for pages. They could be using this now or sometime in the future for spying on you just like the big boys do (google, facebook, et al). Currently the app displays advertisements and sometimes annoying messages complaining about lack of connectivity when you have airplane mode turned on. 5. This phone does not support SD cards greater than 32GB according to some sites. Definitely will not work with a 128GB card. 6. One review claimed it had pretty slow data speed compared to other phones.
^And, difficult to deal with--never reply to U if U want to cancel or downgrade. Usually takes several/ 3 mos. to do anything. If U like a struggle, go ahead; IMO its not worth the hassle.
