There's a lot going on in a modern camera; if anything anywhere in it goes wrong it comes back, but with no info about what's wrong. Someone looks at it quick, says "it snapped a picture", and boxes it up and ships it back out (these likely aren't _repaired_ units, just reprocessed). So high likelihood the issue that caused it's return is still there. I'd say, look at warrantee offered, then use it hard as soon as you get it to exercise everything to see if it all works.

I got stung once as well, but I have purchased a few Canon refurbs and was very happy. Perhaps it was good luck.
I've been stung on refurb cameras. +1

I've had good luck with most refurbished goods. IMO it just comes down to the seller, whether someone really refurbished and tested it or just slapped a refurbished label on a return.
Something small like a camera, if there's a problem it's not very expensive to ship it back to them.
There are 3 types of refurbs you should not buy: 1. cell phones 2. computers 3. vibrators
Canon and Apple offer like-new refurbs with full warranty. I have been happy and yet to get a bad one (knock on wood). Hey #2, I would add condom to your list.
