You usually don't unlock Gold status until you get 300 stars (2 stars earned for every $1 spent), so this is a savings of $150.

This is not a $150 savings. You get 2 stars per dollar spent with green status and at 300 you start collecting rewards stars with gold status. You need 125 stars for a reward with gold status. So you need to spend $62.50 to get a reward excluding double points days. So this saves you the cost of 2.4 rewards if you spend enough to earn 3 rewards with gold status from the 300 green stars skipped. Remember stars expire every 6 months.
